Setting It Up
Let’s get Limin’.
Go through the onboarding process
This will tell you how to upload your data (until you do this, you won’t have access to your dashboard) and get your account ready. If you haven’t done it already, go to Lime now and you’ll see a screen like this:
Set your strategy
Your 28 day strategy score shows how much/well you’ve been using LinkedIn over the last 28 days. To set how much you’re rewarded for each action, go to the strategy page. You can change this at any time, but it will affect your 28 day strategy score. How you set it is totally up to you, and what you want to get out of LinkedIn.
Here are some examples:
This person (let’s call him Dave) thinks comments and great conversations are the bees knees. He wants to focus on building up relationships with people this way, so doesn’t want to be rewarded much for viewing profiles or sending DMs, which he feels can be spammy or take a long time to get right.
Davina, on the other hand, knows LinkedIn is great for her business but doesn’t use it as often as she’d like to. So she wants to be rewarded for any of her LinkedIn activity.
Reg prefers to view lots of profile and send loads of DMs. They’re a recruiter so quickly getting to the point is what they prefer to do.
Work in small batches
We recommend you begin by sorting your connections by date, and choosing a manageable number of people you’ve connected with recently. Let’s say you connected with 50 people last month, you can sort them by going to Dashboard, selecting Date Connected then Last Month.
Just remember - this is your way of using Lime. Some of us connect with hundreds of people per month, some of us connect with 5 new people every month. You want enough people in the search range that it’s a meaningful amount to work with, but it needs to be small enough to be manageable. 20-100 is probably best.
When you have your list, it’s time to start working through each one. Click their name to open the side bar, where you can add tags, decide how often you’d like to check in with them, and start commenting, DMing or having great conversations. Just make sure you log any activity in Lime.
Next, add the people you communicate with regularly. You can do this by searching their names in Lime and marking them with the microphone, heart or star button (use these buttons however you like, but we use the microphone for people who post a lot, the heart for our favourite people and the star for people who are a little bit LinkedIn famous).
You could also add a tag with something like “daily friends” or “favourites”. Make sure to set your check in reminder schedule for each of them.
If you prefer not to search by name, find the people who comment on your posts most often.
Or, you can simply keep Lime open as you comment, DM and interact on LinkedIn - making sure anyone you interact with a lot, or would like to, is tagged in Lime, with the check in reminder setup. See Ways To Work for more ideas.
Start tagging
One of Lime’s most useful features is the ability to tag your contacts. You can add tags individually by working through smaller sections of contacts.
When you’re getting started, we recommend mass-tagging contacts. To do this, simply search for a job title, description or keyword.
Let’s use VA as an example here. Reset the search by clicking the black circle with two arrows.
Then click the profile icon next to the main search bar.
Check you’re now searching everything but names. ”Searching titles, co's, taglines & tags” will appear under the search box.
Then type VA.
At the top of the list on the right there’s a box with “Tag xx records”. Type the name of the tag e.g. VA and all of the contacts with be tagged as VA.
Now you can repeat the steps using related terms like “virtual assistant”, “PA”, and “EA”, tagging everyone with VA.
And don’t worry, it’s easy to remove tags if you accidentally get the wrong person.
A Lime a day keeps the doctor away
Make Lime part of your LinkedIn workflow. Keep it open in a tab beside LinkedIn so you can check off who you’ve spoken to and keep everything up to date.
It’s also important to re-upload your data often. If you add hundreds of people per week, weekly will work. If it’s only a few, monthly or even quarterly will work fine for you. For more information on uploading your connections, go to the Importing Your Contacts guide.
